This decision was made on the basis that prime lenses (although less convenient and make life more difficult for the photographer in a general) provide distinct advantages.

What are prime lenses?

Prime lenses are lenses that have a fixed focal length. This means that the zoom is fixed, and you can't adjust it to get a closer or farther shot. Traditionally, prime lenses are smaller and lighter than zoom lenses, and they tend to be sharper and faster.

Prime lenses enable the wedding photographer to use less flash as they are what we call ‘faster’. This means that these lenses capture more light even in low light situations and therefore less artificial light is necessary.

Since prime lenses do not zoom, the photographer needs to move closer to the scene with his feet and in order to be able to quickly change point of view uses two cameras.

Why use prime lenses for wedding photography?

There are many reasons why prime lenses are a great choice for wedding photography. Here are a few of the most important:

Creative control: Prime lenses force you to think about your composition more carefully. Because you can't zoom, you have to move closer or farther away from your subject to get the shot you want. This can lead to more creative and interesting compositions.

Sharpness: Prime lenses are typically sharper than zoom lenses. This is because they have fewer moving parts, which means there is less distortion and more light can reach the sensor. Sharpness is important for wedding photography, as you want to capture every detail of the wedding day.

Faster apertures: Prime lenses often have wider maximum apertures than zoom lenses. This means that you can shoot in lower light conditions and still get a sharp, well-exposed photo. This can be especially helpful if you are shooting at a wedding reception or other indoor event.

Smaller and lighter: Prime lenses are typically smaller and lighter than zoom lenses. This is because they have fewer moving parts. This can be a big advantage if you are shooting all day long, as it will help to reduce fatigue.

Infact it can be argued that prime lenses enable more creativity from the part of the wedding photographer as he is so accustomed to the focal lengths and can explore new focusing options, which traditional zoom lenses do not allow.

For me, during a wedding day, I like to keep the options as simple as possible as I want to concentrate more on the composition and the moments rather then on the specific settings. This enables me to be more creative and daring with the tools at hand.

Disadvantages of using prime lenses during a wedding day

While for Franklin, prime lenses are his preferred choice, they also have a few disadvantages that may make them less suitable for certain situations and not all photographers prefer prime lenses! Here is a list of the main downsides of using prime lenses:

Limited Zooming: Prime lenses have a fixed focal length, which means you cannot zoom in or out to adjust your composition without physically moving closer or farther away from your subject. This can be restrictive in situations where you need to adapt quickly to changing distances or unpredictable subject movements.

Need for Multiple Lenses: To cover a wide range of focal lengths, you may need to carry multiple prime lenses, which can add weight and bulk to your camera bag. This is in contrast to zoom lenses that provide a wider range of focal lengths in a single lens. In fact to counter this point, Franklin always uses multiple camera bodies.

Less Flexibility in Changing Composition: With limited zooming capabilities, you may need to adjust your position or perspective more often to achieve the desired framing. This can be challenging in confined spaces or when movement is restricted.

Higher Cost per Focal Length: While individual prime lenses typically cost less than zoom lenses, the total cost of acquiring a set of prime lenses to cover a broad range of focal lengths can be comparable or even exceed the cost of a high-quality zoom lens.

Learning Curve for Composition: Using prime lenses effectively requires a more deliberate approach to composition, as you need to consider the framing and perspective carefully due to the fixed focal length. This may be more challenging for beginners or photographers accustomed to zoom lenses.

Limited Range for Certain Subjects: For specific subjects, such as wildlife photography, where you need to cover a wide range of distances quickly, zoom lenses offer greater flexibility and adaptability. Prime lenses may not be well-suited for these situations.

Increased Risk of Dust and Damage: Changing lenses more frequently can increase the risk of dust or dirt entering the lens system, potentially affecting image quality. Zoom lenses, with their integrated zoom mechanisms, tend to be less prone to dust intrusion.

Potential for Focal Length Confusion: For some photographers, switching between different prime lenses with varying focal lengths can lead to confusion or errors in composition due to the lack of zoom adjustment.
